Why designers look past Icaros

Icaros can provide Windows Explorer thumbnails for essentially any video media format supported by FFmpeg. [1] It also provides Explorer properties for many popular media filetypes. [2] Icaros can register filetypes supported by FFmpeg along with a number of other filetypes it supports natively. [10]

That is a media and video focus, so a designer whose folders hold Photoshop, Affinity, DWG or CorelDRAW files may want to compare tools. The facts on its page do not list design formats, so check whether the files you work with are covered.

Icaros is described as a collection of lightweight Windows Shell Extensions. [11] Its thumbnails are kept in a cache, and you can change where that cache is stored. [12]

People also look for a different tool because they want a Space-bar preview, a full image viewer or batch conversion. The Icaros page, as quoted here, does not say whether it offers those, so check before assuming either way. Icaros works on Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 10 and Windows 11, [13] so check your own Windows version against that list.

SageThumbs 2K: thumbnails for design, RAW and video files

SageThumbs 2K is made by the team that publishes this site. It adds File Explorer thumbnails for 363 file types that Windows can't render natively, including camera RAW, Photoshop PSD, HEIC/AVIF, and video. [3] It pulls an embedded preview directly out of design and CAD files such as Photoshop, Affinity, AutoCAD DWG, and CorelDRAW with no rendering needed. [14]

Thumbnails also work in OneDrive and Synology Drive folders. [15] Images carrying an embedded ICC profile or wide-gamut tag (Display P3 / Adobe RGB) are converted into sRGB before display. [16]

From the right-click menu you can convert images, resize them, rotate or flip them losslessly, and combine images into a PDF or CBZ. [17] It adds image dimensions, EXIF camera details and audio tags to Explorer's Details pane, hover tooltips, and sortable columns for formats Windows can't read itself. [18]

It runs on Windows 11, with separate installers for x64 and ARM64. [19] It is free for personal, noncommercial use under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0. [4] Commercial use needs a per-installation licence: US$2.99 a month, or US$49 once for a perpetual licence with 12 months of updates. [5]

QuickLook: instant file previews with the Space bar

QuickLook provides instant file previews by pressing Space. [6]

It claims instant previews with zero lag. [20] It uses hardware-accelerated rendering. [21] Its page lists images, videos, documents, code, 3D models, archives and fonts. [22] For images it names JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP and RAW. [23]

The page quoted here does not say it adds thumbnails to Explorer folders, so check that if thumbnails in folders are what you need.

XnView MP: image viewer, photo management and batch tools

XnView is described as a free image viewer, photo management, and image resizer software. [7] It can export to about 70 different file formats. [24] It supports more than 500 image formats. [25]

It includes batch conversion tools. [26] Its page also names macOS and Linux support. [27]

Its page frames it as an application for viewing and organizing images, so check whether it also fills Explorer folders with thumbnails.

Seer: a Space-bar previewer for many file kinds

Seer has built-in preview support for PDFs, images, code, video, archives, Markdown, and plugins. [8]

The facts available here do not cover price or Explorer thumbnails, so check both on its own page.

Microsoft PowerToys: a set of Windows utilities

PowerToys includes over 30 utilities for customizing and optimizing Windows. [9] It is licensed under the MIT license. [28]

It can be installed from the Microsoft Store or with a downloaded installer file. [29]

The facts here do not list which file types it previews, so check that against your own formats.

How to pick the right Icaros alternative

If your folders hold Photoshop, Affinity, DWG or CorelDRAW files alongside camera RAW and HEIC, SageThumbs 2K pulls embedded previews from design and CAD files and adds thumbnails for 363 file types. [14] [3]

If you want to tap Space and look at a file, QuickLook and Seer both describe a preview. QuickLook opens it by pressing Space. [6] Seer lists PDFs, images, code, video, archives and Markdown. [8]

If you want one program to view and organize pictures, XnView MP is described as an image viewer, photo manager and resizer. [7] If you would rather convert from the right-click menu, SageThumbs 2K offers that. [17]

If you want a broad set of Windows tweaks, PowerToys bundles over 30 utilities. [9]

If video thumbnails from FFmpeg-supported formats are your main need, Icaros states exactly that. [1] Compare that against the video formats you actually use.

If you use the tool for paid work, check the licence. SageThumbs 2K business installs get a 7-day evaluation with every feature, after which thumbnails and previews stop until a licence key is entered. [30]
